Untethered
Untethered consists of objects, plein air mono prints, and paintings from 2019. The works were done during an artist’s residency in Tusa, Sicily and on the Island of Belle-Île, in Brittany. In Tusa, I focused on recording the visual elements of the ancient hilltop town. While roaming through the labyrinth of cobblestone streets, studies were done to map the surrounding colors. The layers of time are visible in the plaster, the improvised plumbing and electrical wiring on the facades. Weaving these details together, I created the tapestry of this town in works on paper. On Belle-Île, I recorded the west coast, the Côte Sauvage, in line and shape, tracing the iconic natural contours along the cliffs. Beyond the cliffs the grazing island horses are an integral part of the landscape. Strong and grounded, wind blown by the salty air, they represent a natural freedom untethered in the fields. This feeling of freedom is what I strive for in my working process.
