THERE

My journey of where I come from and where I am now.
There - Here.
Then and Now.
The catalyst was the story of Phil Orlando, my grandfather,
and his life’s journey, that I have tried to piece together based on a selection of his photographs taken over the timespan from the 1930’s until the mid 1980’s.

Personally, I barely knew him.
Although our lives ran parallel for some time in New York,
I never bumped into him walking around the city.
I had been to all the same places, just at different moments. Recently I discovered, without previously knowing any of his photographs that I have taken pictures that seem to reflect his spirit. We didn’t have a close relationship to one another but I think our photographs do.

The longer i looked at our photos together the more i found recurring elements that resonate with each other.
An echo of shapes, light and shadows.
I also enjoyed the sense of timelessness.

I found it interesting that an image of a rock can be just as timeless as a gaze, or of people walking somewhere.
I started to think about the people in the pictures and wondering about them and their lives. Their journeys.

As for Phil and I, we both grew up in New York City.
We both traveled around the world with our eyes open capturing moments.
This project has shown me how important it is to do what you are compelled to do and that a long trail will be left in the end.
I invite you to create your own narrative and let a story unfold while walking through the exhibition.
